INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIONS FOR THE ELIMINATION AND CONTROL OF VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS (IEC-VL)

The potentially fatal Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani, is endemic to Asia and Africa. The 2012 WHO roadmap for neglected tropical diseases targeted for regional elimination of VL by 2015. Although control efforts in Bangladesh, India and Nepal have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of VL cases and the region is poised to eliminate the disease by 2020 or even earlier as per National Health Policy (India), major logistic and technical challenges persist within Indian subcontinent and Africa. The major objective of the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIONS FOR THE ELIMINATION AND CONTROL OF VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS (IEC-VL) is to bring together leading scientists from academia and industry around the world to deliberate upon new tools, new approaches and routes to implementation.

The themes of the conference include:

  • Epidemiology and surveillance of Leishmaniasis in Asia and Africa
  • Aspects of sandfly biology relevant to VL control
  • Host-parasite interactions and their genomics
  • Immunological responses and immunopathology
  • Post Kala-azar dermal Leishmaniasis
  • Non-invasive field adapted tools (and biomarkers) for VL diagnosis and test of cure
  • VL new drug discovery/drug resistance
  • Vaccine development
  • Platform for research and control
  • CL in Indian subcontinent, epidemiology, therapeutics and control
  • Experiences in the journey towards Leishmaniasis control and elimination
  • Sustained elimination.This conference thus is keen to holistically address/discuss these aspects and would detail the steps that a country must follow for successful elimination and control of VL.
