The Gnatwork will be hosting two international workshops (Bangladesh 2018 and Brazil 2019) over the course of the project.
The first international meeting was held in Bangladesh (September 2018), hosted by Gnatwork Management board member Dr Dinesh Mondal, a senior scientist within the Laboratory for Parasitology, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). This week-long workshop started with a conference day in Dhaka, to bring together experts in entomology within Bangladesh and India. Ten international experts in vector biology were invited to speak around three themes: (i) introduction to the Gnatwork and vectors; (ii) vector research within Southern Asia; (iii) trends and opportunities in vector research. Travel bursary recipients also had the opportunity present a poster on their current research. The conference was followed by four days of training for 26 early-career researchers across sandflies, blackflies and biting midges. Interactive lectures and practicals on biology, ecology and epidemiology were given and training provided in practical field-based sampling and laboratory techniques, including DNA Barcoding.
The next Gnatwork international meeting will be held in Brazil (2019). More details of this workshop will follow shortly.
