The VIII International Simuliidae Symposium 2018 took place at The University of Birmingham on the 21 June. Sessions were held on blackfly ecology and systematics, genomics, and working towards the elimination of onchocerciasis in Africa. Attendees also had the opportunity to discover more about nanopore DNA sequencing, though a workshop session on the portable MinION real-time DNA sequencer.

Gnatwork Manager Emma Howson attended the symposium to introduce blackfly researchers to the Gnatwork and the opportunities for funding. We look forward to networking with the delegates over the coming years.
