14 Aug 2018

At the start of September, The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) are hosting the Gnatwork’s first international workshop in Bangladesh. Last week, Debashis Ghosh, Assistant Coordination Manager of the Parasitology Unit (icddr,b) visited the Entomology Research Unit, University of Burdwan to learn about their research on Culicoides biting midges, in order to co-ordinate efforts for the upcoming training program in Bangladesh.

“I am really grateful to Dr. Abhijit Mazumdar and his team as they taught me in different aspects of entomological issues”, said Debashis. “All the points I covered during my visit will be helpful in setup similar type of activities here in Bangladesh”.

During his visit, Debashis was introduced to:

  1. Biology, taxonomy and classification of Culicoides using key-based identification based on morphology.
  2. Slide mounting of Culicoides (immature and adult stages).
  3. Sorting and preservation of specimens.
  4. Collection of Culicoides using various trap types, including a demonstration of a UV light trap.
  5. Procedures for collection, transportation and handling of live insects.
  6. Live insect maintenance, including a demonstration of larval rearing.

We look forward to meeting Debashis during our training course in Bangladesh to discuss the techniques learnt.
